About

The Cybersecurity Industrial Applications summer school aims to bring together researchers, IT professionals, and students to learn about a plethora of new technologies and capabilities for developing solutions that aim to enhance the security and resilience of industrial applications. This summer school will focus on the cybersecurity challenges, strategies, and technologies in industrial and critical infrastructure environments.

The summer school will cover topics like risk management, AI-enabled intrusion detection, and threat intelligence, while focusing on digital forensics readiness, strategic honeypot deployment, and AI-powered attack and defense scenarios. Emerging topics will be also discussed such as B5G/6G security considerations, IoT zero-touch security, digital twins in cybersecurity, and security solutions based on programmable networks. The summer school will offer fast and effective learning, including lectures from leading researchers and professionals targeting at university and college students, PhD students, researchers and professionals in the IT sector.

BCI 2025

The Summer School will take place in parallel and collocated with the 11th Balkan Conference in Informatics (BCI). Notably, the first BCI event took place at Thessaloniki/Greece in 2003. Past BCI events have been organized in Greece (3), Bulgaria (2), North Macedonia (2), Romania (2) and Serbia (1). BCI proceedings will be published as post-proceedings in the Springer CCIS series. BCI will be co-organized by the BCI Steering Committee and the Albanian Academy of Sciences.

Panagiotis Sarigiannidis 

Director of ITHACA lab
Professor, University of Western Macedonia

Prof. Panagiotis Sarigiannidis is the Director of the ITHACA lab (https://ithaca.ece.uowm.gr/), co-founder of the 1st spin-off of the University of Western Macedonia: MetaMind Innovations P.C. (https://metamind.gr) and the I3S spin-off (https://i3slabs.com/en/), and Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the University of Western Macedonia, Kozani, Greece. He received the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2001 and 2007, respectively. He has published over 400 papers in international journals, conferences and book chapters, including IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Internet of Things, IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting, IEEE Systems Journal, IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Access and Computer Networks. He received 8 best paper and presentation awards and the IEEE SMC TCHS Research and Innovation Award 2023. He has been involved in several national, European and international projects, coordinating and technically leading numerous national and European projects including H2020, Horizon Europe, Erasmus+ and operational programs. His research interests include internet of things, cybersecurity and telecommunications. He is an IEEE member and participates in the Editorial Boards of various journals like IEEE Transactions on Communications, IET Networks, International Journal of Communication Systems and International Journal of Information Security. 

Emanuele Bellini

Associate Professor, University of Roma Tre

Prof. Emanuele Bellini, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Roma Tre (Italy), an Academic Visitor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge (UK), and a Research Fellow at Khalifa University (UAE). He is also the Director of the Second-Level Master’s Program in Cyber Humanities for Heritage Security at the University of Roma Tre. His research focuses on the security, resilience, and trust of complex cyber-physical systems, with a particular emphasis on critical infrastructure. He is among the first scholars to extend the concept of critical infrastructure (CI) to the domain of Digital Cultural Heritage, and he is the founder of the emerging discipline of Cyber Humanities. Prof. Bellini is the founder and General Chair of both the IEEE International Conference on Cyber Security and Resilience and the IEEE International Conference on Cyber Humanities. He serves as Chair of the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Cyber Humanities and Co-Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Homeland Security. He is also Vice-Chair of the European Integrated Mission Group for Security (IMG-S) and Coordinator of the Working Group on Cyber Humanities at the National Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics (CINI). In addition, he is an Associate Editor for Digital Library Perspectives (Emerald) and Digitalia. He actively participates in several EU-funded projects and served as Coordinator of the RESOLUTE project, focused on building resilience in urban transport systems.

Igor Kotsiuba

Assistant Professor, Durham University

Igor Kotsiuba is Assistant Professor in Finance (Financial Technology and Security) at  Durham University Business School, focused on Security of Financial Services and Technology, including participation in EU Horizon Research and Innovation and UK Cybersecurity Clusters, collaboration with Fintech industry and delivering Executive Education modules on Cybersecurity of Financial Critical Infrastructure and Cyber Risk dimension. Since his PhD in IT, Dr Kotsiuba worked for over decade in industry and Academia and founded a a digital forensics lab in Ukraine. Elected in 2018 as Head of the Cybersecurity Work Group of the American Chamber of Commerce and Honorary Chairman of Cybersecurity Cluster, acting as an Of Counsel for government and industry managed more than 10 transnational cybersecurity R&I projects on National Critical Infrastructure, Dynamic Risk Assessment.

Thomas Lagkas

Associate Professor, Democritus University of Thrace

Dr. Thomas Lagkas is Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics of the Democritus University of Thrace and Director of the Laboratory of Industrial and Educational Embedded Systems. He is also co-founder of the MetaMind Innovations spin-off. Previously, he served as Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at The University of Sheffield International Faculty, Departmental Research Director, and Leader of the ICT Track of the South-East European Research Centre, where he was with since 2012. He has been an Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, Greece, from 2007 to 2013. He has also served as Laboratory Associate and Scientific Associate at the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki from 2004 to 2012. His research and teaching mainly focus on the broader Computer Networks scientific field. He has worked as a freelancer computer programmer, he is IEEE Senior Member, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in UK. He has also been General Secretary of the Managing Committee of the Greek Computer Society – Macedonia Thrace Chapter.

Panagiotis Radoglou-Grammatikis

Director of R&D at K3Y Ltd

Panagiotis Radoglou-Grammatikis received the Diploma degree (MEng, 5 years) and PhD from the Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications Eng. (now Dept. of Electrical and Computer Eng.), Faculty of Eng., University of Western Macedonia, Greece, in 2016 and 2023, respectively. His main research interests are in the area of cybersecurity and mainly focus on cyber-AI, intrusion detection and security games. He has published more than 50 research papers in international scientific journals, conferences and book chapters, including IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions of Network and Service Management, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing and Computer Networks (Elsevier Publishing). He was included in Stanford University’s list (shared by Elsevier) of the Top 2% of Scientists in the World for 2021, 2022 and 2023. Additionally, he has been honoured with five Best Paper Awards in IEEE CAMAD 2019, IEEE CSR 2021, WSCE 2022, SEEDA CECNSM 2022 and IEEE CSR 2023, while in 2024, he received the Oustanding Service Award from IEEE SMC TC on Homeland Security. He also serves as a guest editor for Discover Internet of Things (Springer Publishing) and Electronics (MDPI Publishing) and contributes as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals. Currently, he is working as an R&D director at K3Y Ltd, coordinating the technical activities and strategy of K3Y in various R&D projects, including H2020 SPIDER, H2020 SANCUS, H2020 5G-INDUCE, H2020 TREEADS, Η2020-MSCA Swiftv2x, TRUSTEE, INCODE, ACROSS, UP2030 and JAUNTY. He is also a postdoc researcher at the ITHACA Lab of the University of Western Macedonia, participating in several national and European-funded research projects, such as H2020 SPEAR, H2020 SDN-microSENSE, H2020 TERMINET, H2020 EVIDENT, H2020 ELECTRON, AI4CYBER and DYNABIC. Moreover, he is a co-founder of MetaMind Innovations P.C., the first spin-off of the University of Western Macedonia. Finally, he is a member of IEEE, ACM and the Technical Chamber of Greece.

Yannis Spyridis

Lecturer, Kingston University

Dr Yannis Spyridis is a Lecturer in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence within the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, specialising in artificial intelligence, deep learning, and autonomous systems. His research focuses on reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, and the development of intelligent systems for real-world applications, including robotics, drone operations, energy optimisation, and mental health support. He also works on interdisciplinary projects that combine immersive technologies with sustainable and practical innovation.
